Not only are Black Australorps popular for laying large brown eggs, they are also great for their hardiness and calm demeanor. As a mature chicken, they will have a beautiful, full black plumage that shows hints of a green sheen. Known to mature early, these birds are also very persistent in their laying - even in extreme weather conditions and on average, will lay around 250 eggs per year. Add to that their large body size and you've got a great dual purpose breed!
